General Session | A Whole New Game: "I'd like to buy a RIN, please"

Another year of obstacles has left many in the biodiesel industry feeling like the battered contestants on "Wipeout." Why do we keep going back for more? Because as the only domestically produced, advanced biofuel that is commercially available in the U.S., biodiesel is worth the fight. The federal Renewable Fuels Standard has provided a lifeline, but what is its true impact, and how can biodiesel producers and marketers put themselves in a winning position? In an effort to gain some perspective on the events of the past year, we're bringing back our 2010 general session petroleum industry experts. We'll also confront another key issue that almost wiped biodiesel out of the RFS: pseudoscience. Keynote Michael Shermer, founder of Skeptic Magazine, columnist for Scientific American, and world-renowned "debunker," will explore the fuzzy land between science and pseudoscience... an area likely to shape public opinion on biodiesel for years to come.
Presenters: Joe Jobe, CEO- National Biodiesel Board; Ron Marr - Minnesota Soybean Processors; David Blatnik - Marathon Petroleum Company; John Cusick - Morgan Stanley Capital Group.; Bruce Heine - Magellan Midstream Partners; Jim Lelio - Kinder Morgan Pipeline Group; C. Mike Reed - NIC Holding Corp.; Michael Shermer - Skeptic Magazine

Session 3 | Feeding and Fueling the World

So far, biodiesel has been made from oils and fats that are byproducts of producing food like soybean meal, pork chops, and chicken legs, or from the leftover oils from cooking food. But where else will future biodiesel feedstocks come from? Be among the first to learn about developments in new biodiesel sources like algae and microorganisms. You will also hear about phenomenal developments with existing crops that will double the production of both food and fuel on the same amount of land!
Moderator: Alan Weber - MARC-IV
Presenters: Cindy Ludwig – Monsanto; Jose Olivares, PhD - Los Alamos National Laboratory; Dave Winsness – Greenshift

10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Session 4 | Just Use It: Biodiesel Success Stories

The use of biodiesel is as versatile as the diesel engine itself, from heavy duty vehicles to boats and power generation. Learn from some of the nation's most interesting - and inspiring - biodiesel users. You will hear how biodiesel's unique benefits help them meet challenging operational, environmental, and sustainability goals.

Session 6 | Changing the Biodiesel Paradigm: Optimized Biodiesel

Some biodiesel properties are determined mostly by the makeup of today's oils or fats—none of which has been optimized for fuel use. Now that EPA has declared biodiesel an "advanced biofuel," demand created by RFS2 and the heating oil industry could someday top 12 billion gallons per year. This has top scientists and researchers buzzing about the possibilities of developing new varieties of oils and fats with optimum properties for biodiesel use. Be among the first to hear about the potential of B100 that freezes below -20F and that has better stability properties than today's Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel!

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2011

8:45 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
General Session | A Policy of Truth: The Role of Government Policy in Advancing Biodiesel

To make it in today's marketplace, the truth is that a renewable fuel must be more than a great product. It must have strong state and federal policies in place to support its growth and development. With the advent of carbon reduction measures and the growing popularity of Bioheat mandates, state policies are more influential than ever. The Renewable Fuels Standard 2 has created a market driver, but 2010 showed the dramatic consequences of an industry having the "policy rug" pulled out from under it, with the loss of the federal biodiesel tax incentive. What course is charted from here? You'll hear from the industry's top state and federal policy strategists on what we have done well, where we are going, and how our industry can advance to the next level of effectiveness in the capitol halls of America.

Session 13 | Clean (and Green) Diesel Revolution: Particulate Traps, NOx Aftertreatment, and Biodiesel

With the advent of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel in 2006, new diesel aftertreatment providing 90 percent reductions in NOx and PM is hitting showroom floors. It is leading to a "clean diesel revolution" like we've never seen. But the use of biodiesel in this new technology is turning it into a clean and GREEN diesel revolution! The techies in the crowd won't want to miss this high-level session on how biodiesel and biodiesel blends perform in new particulate matter trap and NOx aftertreatment technology....and how the use of biodiesel has advantages that hydrocarbon-based fuels can't match.
